Jacinta’s Special Love for the Holy Father

Jacinta was privileged to have two visions of the Holy Father. In one vision she saw the pope suffering deeply:

I saw the Holy Father in a very big house, kneeling by a table, with his head buried in his hands, and he was weeping. Outside the house, there were many people. Some of them were throwing stones, others were cursing and using bad language. Poor Holy Father, we must pray very much for him.10

Another time, when the children were praying outdoors, Jacinta stood up and asked Lucia:

Can’t you see all those highways and roads and fields full of people, who are crying with hunger and have nothing to eat? And the Holy Father in a church praying before the Immaculate Heart of Mary? And so many people praying with him?11

Remember that our Lady in her third apparition had foretold that with the spread of Communism, the Church would be persecuted and the Holy Father would have much to suffer. After these visions the children, but especially Jacinta, always kept the pope in their prayers and sacrifices. In our own love and loyalty for the Church, we should do likewise. His task and responsibilities are enormous. He certainly shares the passion of Christ as “the servant of the servants of God”. An example of this comes from the talks of Archbishop Sheen, who personally knew a number of the popes. Pope Paul VI once told Archbishop Sheen that he read his mail at midnight, just before going to bed. The Pope said that in nine out of every ten letters, there was a thorn. Perhaps it was a bishop writing to the Holy Father about persecutions, or scandals or lack of vocations in his diocese. Pope Paul VI said that when he lay his head on the pillow after reading all those letters, he felt it was like placing his head on a crown of thorns. No one can truly understand the tremendous burden the Holy Father carries for the love of Christ and the love of his people. Like Jacinta, let us pray often for the Holy Father.
